That part sort of fits, the MC himself was a basketball (and "football", and maybe golf) player so it is no great surprise that some of his friends were teammates.
What makes me think it is not that story is that the plot points he gave were minor ones in the context of that story. Major points include his martial arts, and him being a kicker and safety (?) for his HS and College Football teams.
Shrink42 wrote some other stories around basketball but I never finished any of them.
