Login Change?

awnlee jawking ๐Ÿšซ

When I kick my computer into life first thing and click on my link to the SOL homepage, I normally get taken to the WLPC login screen. Today I got the SOL homepage and I had to click on login to actually log in. Has there been a change to the log in system?

@awnlee jawking

When I open SOL I am already logged in.

I always logout at the end of the day and my browser deletes its cookies. But I'm not paranoid, they really are out to get me!

The fact that you are paranoid* is not proof that no one is out to get you.

*paranoia is the delusion that EVERYONE is out to get you.

No. Nothing changed. Did you somehow change your bookmark?

No, my 'bookmark' hasn't changed.

I keep my favourites in a file and that file is my home page. That file was last updated on 23rd April.

I got the same behaviour today. It's not a problem, it just means an extra step.

I keep my iPad open to sol and have never had to reenter login info. But the last few days I'm getting logged out repeatedly. Today, I was switching back and forth between sol and the hockey game and I got logged out while between tabs. Today for the first time I also got a pop up saying I mightโ€ฆ just mightโ€ฆ see adult content. Browser issue? I'm using Firefox. And warning me that I might see adult content is just encouraging me.

Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

@Rodeodoc

That's usually a sign of using a private/incognito tab to access the site. Switch back to a normal tab and you won't get logged out repeatedly.

I get the same behavior, and the three login ladies no longer appear. The library background disappeared a couple of weeks ago. Also, today I got an adult content warning. Normally I just enter storiesonline.net in my location bar.

@blobbo

I always type storiesonline.net in the address bar and hit enter. I first see a choice of buttons with Login at the top, then see the ladies after a very short delay, and the buttons change position on the screen slightly. I agree the library background disappeared a couple of weeks ago. I haven't seen an adult content warning.

Now, finestories.com, I get taken straight to the home page.

My system is Linux, browser is Google Chrome in incognito mode. I'm in Australia, accessing the NBN internet infrastructure through a FibreToTheNode connection, on a nominal 50Mbps unlimited data plan. I suspect that means my connection is slow enough that the sight of the ladies is delayed.

Well, colour me surprised :-)

This morning, straight to the home page, with an 'Adult Content' popup over it.

That's the new behaviour for the site. While nothing changed with regards to logging in, the flow has changed.

Now if you reach the site with no cookies, you'll see the adult warning and the site no longer displays the splash/intro page with the ladies when you hit the basic domain name.

If you're logged in, nothing changes.

I'm changing how things work for first time visitors to make it clearer. The home page will have additional stuff for non-logged-in visitors to help guide them.

A new story suggestion mechanism will soon debut. It will try to predict what you would like to read. The more you use the site, the smarter it should get (if I built the algorithm correctly). Voting on each story will help the system know what you like and what you don't, so voting will be more important.

Now if you reach the site with no cookies,

Since I always access in incognito mode, I guess that means always no cookies. And I will see nothing as a result of the new story suggestion mechanism.

You're logging in. Incognito mode starts with a clean slate and cleans up after you close the tab. But if you log in, you have cookies, they're just session cookies instead of long term ones.

If you're logged in the new system will still work.

Is this a Premier feature?
What will the effect of this be on 1-bombers?

We'll have to see how this pans out when it is introduced.

Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

@Dinsdale

Is this a Premier feature?

No.

What will the effect of this be on 1-bombers?

Theoretically, they'll be offered less of the stories they vote 1 for.

I call the first screen I see the 'intro page', I don't see the home page until after I have selected one of the buttons on the intro page. I call the page I see if I select Home from anywhere the home page.

This morning, when I went to storiesonline.net, no surprise, got the adult content warning, then the home page. Did not log in, just checked New Stories, Updated Stories, Blogs and went to Forum. Went away from the PC for a while. When I came back and selected New Forum Entries, SURPRISE, got the adult content warning again.

What triggers the adult content warning, other than first access to site ?

I wonder whether you get it when you start with one of the sister sites? And if not, what happens when you then hop over to SOL by entering its address in the browser address bar?

But which site? SOL, the site under discussion, or all WLPC sites?

@awnlee jawking

If the site's setting as 'Adult', then the warning is shown.

It's not shown for Finestories. It's also not shown for Scifistories.

If other sites are added, then depending on the topic/focus of the site, it may get labelled 'Adult' and then the warning will show.

@Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

Just tried something.

I started from scifistories.com and logged in. No adult warning.

Then I typed storiesonline.net into the address bar. I got the adult warning. But when I got to the site, there was the Login link at the top as though I wasn't logged in.

I clicked on Login and I became logged in without being prompted for e-mail address and password.

Still, you put out the adult warning where it was needed.

AJ

Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

@awnlee jawking

I clicked on Login and I became logged in without being prompted for e-mail address and password.

That's because you were logged into the system. On SOL the cookies were missing. So when you click 'Login' the system forwards you to 'login.wlpc.com' where you're logged in and then since you're logged in, the system sends you back to SOL with the instructions needed to set the cookies properly.

If you're logged into any of the sites, then that means you're logged into 'login.wlpc.com'. Which means that a transfer to a different site should be seemless and logging into an unlogged-in site would happen without a password.

You click login. The screen flashes white for a fraction of a second and you're logged into SOL. No need for password.

The acknowledgment is saved in the session data. If you're not logged in and you have no cookies from the site (like wiping your cookies via incognito) then there is no way for the site to know you've confirmed.

If you don't want to do the confirmation thing, then either don't log out, or don't use incognito or change your bookmark to point to the log in link.

on refresh in incognito, I got the logged on page scrolled to the reading point AND the "confirmation thing" shown at the top of the page.

So two issues:

1 Appeared logged (could tel by the background color and page length) on AND "confirmation thing" simultaneously.

2 The "confirmation thing appeared at the top of the page instead of fixed on the screen. I had to scroll a lot to reach it.

Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

@Gauthier

fixed.
