search strangeness

limab 🚫

A bit long but I want to make sure people can follow my logic.

I remembered a story about making engine parts. They made piston rings, had a union, deciding which way to go in business is like having a spear - pick one direction, and made rings for a Japanese company.

So I searched "union rings spear japanese". Five returns, none are what I was looking for. I then deleted "union" 27 returns including Six-Months Turnaround by Morgan. Found the answer. What confuses me is I confirmed that I spelled union correctly and the story has a union in it.

So any ideas why it did not show up in the first search? It may be why some of my other searches have come up dry.

Thanks, limab

What are you selecting in the search, under the description text box.

Options are:
All words in any order
All words in exact order
Any word
Exact string
Entire words

It may be that your search words are being treated as ANDs, instead of OR. So, Union AND rings AND spear AND japanese, instead of Union OR rings OR spear OR japanese.

Perhaps you need to try the 'Any Word' option?

Hmm, I was inexact in my description, sorry. I have premier and I was in Advanced Search -> Story Text Search, and used "find:all words". So it should have been an AND search. Also all the words are in the story so AND should be the correct logic used, if I had used "Find: Any Word" the OR search would have returned thousands of results(capped at 1000 I believe). So I am still at a loss.

Thanks, limab

My dropdown only has all words, any words, and exact match. so I don't know of the other options.

So any ideas why it did not show up in the first search?

While the results show 'whole stories', the actual search is per chapter.

So while the whole story has all 4 words, at least one chapter has to have all 4 words to show up.

Ahh, THAT explains LOTS. Thank you, I will keep that in mind for future searches.
