The Earth has been destroyed. Shortly before the destruction, a mysterious, apparently benevolent race of aliens known as the Others provided 20 multigeneration colony ships to allow the Human Race to spread to other worlds and thereby survive. Each ship started from a different part of the world, and travels in a different direction. When each generation on the ship reaches 14 years old, their parents go into a cryonic suspension until a suitable world is found and colonised.
