Dan had been an ordinary decent man at heart.

Well, at least he had married the girl he’d put in the family way. Then he’d responded to his country’s call, serving as a soldier in the war.

But he’d seen little action in North Africa; which was just luck really. A mate of his had been killed from a single bomb at base camp while he and another mate Micky, had been in a bordello!

That had been the most memorable day of Dan’s entire war; when Micky had dared him to go to that notorious whorehouse in the backstreets of Morocco.

It was going home time for Dan; he was being Demobbed! He was about to become a civilian once more. But that transition is never easy and it would be awkward for Dan too.

Margot was now an attractively employed woman; slim and shapely with her auburn hair pinned up at the back showing off her white graceful neck; yet her frosty demeanour somehow offset her looks; even as it did in her early relationship with Dan.

And Dan also found that Margot no longer lived at their old address; the rented rooms they had moved into just before the baby was born.

Margot now lived in a modern little house on the edge of town?
