SETTING THE STAGE
My sister, Susan, and I grew up in a full time nudist home. Our parents, Benson and Marion, had found the positive values and benefits of family and social nudism and felt that it would promote our self confidence and respect for the individuality of others. They encouraged us to be nude whenever possible and we were all nude for our everyday activities. For us being nude was natural and normal. Being nude was merely a state of dress and as wholesome nudists we separated nudity from sexuality. Except for the fact that we were all nude, our family life was no different than that of any textile family.
After moving to our new home in Alpine in 1962 our mother began organizing a small celebration parties for Susan’s June birthday and my October birthday. Our first party was Susan’s 13th birthday party in 1962. As we grew older and expanded our circle of friends, the parties became “teen parties” and were bigger and more complex. Eventually, Susan pitched in to help mom plan the parties and finalize the guest lists.
We usually had two or three Summer teen parties between late May and the end of September. The first was a start of Summer and Susan’s birthday celebration. The last party was two weeks before school started to mark the end of Summer. Sometimes we had a late July party marking no special occasion. Our last teen party was Susan’s 20th birthday party in 1969.
On our visits to the two local nudist camps we made many friends and we attended nude gatherings at our home and at their homes. Over the years we hosted many parties at our home, including birthday, graduation, dinner and anniversary. Our invited guests knew that ours was a nudist home. Even though nudity was not mandatory, it was strongly encouraged and with very few exceptions everyone our parties was nude. Many of our friends were from the two nudist camps that we regularly visited so there was never a shortage of guests for our parties.
On occasion, and only after careful consideration, we would invite a friend from school. Being more focused in math and science, my school mates were mostly girls and I rarely made invitations. However, Susan was very outgoing and, as part of a large social circle at school, would usually invite one or two of her girl friends. We had a strict protocol when inviting friends to our parties, because we had to make sure that they would not have any issues with being nude to participate in our party activities. After offering the invitation one of our parents, usually my mom, Marian, would contact the guest’s parents for their formal permission to attend.
Marion would describe our wholesome nudist lifestyle and our strict moral code of conduct to the invitee’s parents, She would then invite them to visit our home to see for themselves before attending the party. She would explain that at our parties, except for the fact that everyone was be nude, there was no difference in our activities from any “textile” party. We usually had six to eight adult activity monitors to assure that everyone behaved appropriately and had fun participating in the organized activities. Marion felt that asking the parents and activity monitors to also be nude would help reduce the novice attendees’ focus on their own nudity. In only a few instances did she fail to convince an attending parent to attend nude.
Our spacious back yard was made for outdoor entertaining with plenty of room for large parties. It had a covered patio deck that extended the entire length of the house. The covered patio deck area featured a built in BBQ, dimmable lighting and speakers for music. The lighted patio deck was an ideal place to set up tables and chairs for dining. A nearby door to the house gave access to a guest bathroom. Near to the door was an outdoor shower, convenient for showering before entering the swimming pool. The large rectangular swimming pool was three feet deep at the ends and only five feet deep at the center. Because of it’s shallowness the pool was suitable for fun and game play and diving was not allowed.
Complimenting the patio and swimming pool was an expansive split level yard. The upper level was a wide grass lawn for game play. Paved steps led down to the lower level, a quiet picnic area with a view of the valley below. A quaint garden shed on the lower level was used for storing yard maintenance equipment and the party tables and chairs.
Our close friends, Becky and Julie, would arrive early the day before each party to help with preparations. They would spend the night so we would have most of two days to get the place ready. The four of us, Susan, Becky, Julie and I, would start by mowing the lawn and sweeping the patio deck. Then we would bring up the tables and folding chairs from the shed in the lower yard. After arranging the tables in their normal positions we would stage the folding chairs in groups around the patio. These chairs served double duty as game activity obstacles and later provide sitting for dinner. We would then block off the steps to the lower yard with a rope, preventing people from disappearing into the evening darkness and engaging in risky behavior.
The following day we would help my parents prepare the snacks and food, hang the decorative streamers and prepare the items required for the selected games. We would also put out the swimming pool floating rope in case it was needed for game play. One of the last things we did was to put out two dozen bath towels in the covered front porch for guests to use for sitting. We also put out a sign directing the arriving guests to not ring the doorbell and to use the paved path around the house leading directly to the back yard. Even with all that we had to do we had plenty of free time to take dips in the pool, horse around, and play cards or board games.
OUR EARLY PARTIES
During our early teen years our parties were usually simple pool parties usually lasting less than three hours. They were always held on a Friday evening. We usually had 10 to 12 guests and 3 or 4 sets of parents, often just the mom. Although the parties were scheduled to start at 6 PM, many attendees would arrive early to help with the preparations.
Our party activities were planned so that everyone was involved. The action would start with an hour of pool activities like Marco Polo, pool tag and swim relay races. We would dry off by playing an hour of lawn games like musical chairs, wheel barrow races and balloon pop wars. That would be followed on the patio deck with a buffet of burgers and hot dogs, chips, fruit and melon slices and juice and soft drinks. We would then gather for cake and ice cream. My dad would then announce that those that wanted would meet by the pool for the end of party group photo. After the photo session my dad would turn off the background music, turn up the lights and start putting things away. Most of the guests would take the outside path to the front porch to dress and leave. A few would use the telephone to call home to get picked up, then go to the front porch to dress and wait for their ride.
TIME MARCHES ON
Entering young adulthood our invited friends tended to be over 18 years old and we were able to dispense with the parental permission. At times these guests were a dating couple. We still made sure that the invitees understood that we were nudists and practiced wholesome nonsexual nudity at our home, including at our parties. By accepting the invitation they were agreeing to attend the party nude and not violate our conduct guidelines. Everyone was going to be nude and our code of conduct required all of our guests to be treated with respect and not be made to feel uncomfortable. Our parties were intended to give everyone the opportunity of being together nude while enjoying some clean and safe high quality fun.
In order to not interfere with everyone’s weekend plans our parties were held on Friday evenings, beginning at 6 PM and ending promptly at 11 PM. All of our friends always looked forward to attending and no one arrived late. Our more experienced guests would arrive early to help with setting up and spend extra time visiting and horsing around before the start of the organized activities. These preparations usually involved hanging paper party decorations, blowing up various types of balloons for decorations and game play, setting up the record player, selecting the music records and helping put out the snacks and some dinner buffet items. Because the guests would expend a lot of energy in game play a refreshment table with savory snacks, juices and soft drinks was set up at the patio. During the party the patio lighting was set to a lower level and popular music was played in the background over the patio speakers.
The parties required detailed planning in order to keep everyone actively involved. Adult activity monitors were assigned to keep the action flowing, keeping idle guests occupied and out of trouble. As in the textile parties we had attended there were plenty of guests and a few supervising parents. Usually 12 to 16 guests and 4 or 5 sets of parents, often just the mom as most of the fathers chose not to attend.
Everyone attending the parties and gatherings at our home were expected to be nude. Clothing was never allowed in our swimming pool. For our Summer teen parties nudity was required for all guests taking part in the game activities, including all of the swimming pool and lawn games. In order to set an example and minimize distractions the adult activity monitors were also always nude.
On rare occasions, and for various reasons, a guest would choose to remain with some level of dress. At times a non-nudist guest would want to remain dressed for “modesty” reasons. Younger menstruating girls often kept only their bikini bottoms or shorts on. The older girls usually wore a tampon, coloring and trimming the string to make it inconspicuous, and thus would be nude for the game play. Guests and adults retaining any clothing were allowed to be spectators, join in the non-physical activities and to assist with the snack tray and dinner buffet services.
