It was the fall of 1976, and Suzie had just turned twenty-two. She already had a three-year-old little boy with her and a newly divorced husband. They had been high school sweethearts, and she had gotten pregnant at eighteen. It was a marriage doomed from the beginning, and it didn’t last long. Suzie was happy to be free. She was a true nympho at heart and enjoyed sex with a lot of different guys, and even a few gals when the occasion arose.

Suzie was a product of a big, classic fifties’ family with eight kids, four girls and four boys. Her dad was a retired auto worker and had moved to the UP in Michigan to live the good life after getting a work-related disability from General Motors. He bought himself a one hundred and forty acre spread smack in the middle of the woods with some great deer hunting, one of his passions. All four boys were raised hunting and looked forward to deer season with great anticipation every year, except for Bobby, who never took to hunting.

Suzie had two older brothers and two younger brothers. Alan was 18 and had just graduated from high school and still lived at home. Bobby was twenty, single, and a college student, the family intellectual, and wanted to become a writer. Calvin was twenty-five, and Danny was thirty, both of them married with kids and were GM line workers. Suzie’s family was all third-generation auto workers. Her three sisters were all older and married to auto workers.

The two older hunting brothers were ready for opening day of deer season and always came up to their dad’s spread in what had become an annual tradition over the years. At one end of the property was an old rustic hunting cabin that the old man had fixed up pretty nice and made it livable. The boys always stayed there for the hunt. Suzie decided to join the ‘boys’ club’ this year. Even Bobby was coming up from Ann Arbor just to see her. He was always her favorite brother, as he was more sensitive and intuitive compared to the rough and tumble other three. She was no hunter but needed a break from city life and enjoyed the cabin and nature, even if interrupted by the occasional rifle fire. Plus, her folks always liked seeing and doting over their grandson son, Evan, when she was up to see them. He could stay at the main house while she was at the hunting cabin with her brothers. It would be fun to pal around with all her brothers at the same time. That was getting to be a rare event as they got older and led separate lives.

Suzie had driven up to her folks the day before and spent the night there to get Evan situated before she left for the cabin in the early morning. Her dad wasn’t feeling well and was going to miss opening day, a first for him. She left for the cabin with her brother Alan at dawn to do a little clean-up before the other boys arrived.

At eighteen, Alan was a good-looking kid and full of charisma and energy. He wasn’t quite sure of where he was going in life yet, but he had decided that working the line wasn’t for him. Suzie thought he would probably get into some kind of sales career, as he was very handsome and flirtatious and had always been a big hit with all the local girls.

Calvin was the next to arrive from Flint, and he brought along his handsome best buddy, Eddie, for the hunt. Suzie had always had a big crush on Eddie. Calvin was in an unhappy marriage to his wife Kathy but was sticking it out for his kids. He was very active in the UAW and had his eyes on eventually becoming a fulltime, salaried employee of the union. He was the most political of the four boys and a union man to his core.

Danny came next down the dirt road to the cabin. Another unhappy marriage stapled together for the kids’ sake. Danny was a UAW line worker too, but he had his eyes on actually moving up the ladder and becoming GM management. The irony was that about twenty years later, both Calvin and Danny found themselves facing off across the table from each other in UAW contract negotiations. Bobby was coming up the next day to hang out and hike with Suzie while the rest of the boys went hunting.
